Personal Property Securities Register

On 1 February 2021, former Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell released a research paper on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).

The research paper found that an urgent overhaul of the PPSR system is required to make it accessible to small businesses.

It is essential for small businesses to secure their assets and business loans, given the incredibly hard past 12 months and the predicted wave of insolvencies to come, but the PPSR is too difficult to use.

The report recommends streamlining the system, including encouraging small business cloud accounting platforms in to provide regtech solutions such as pop-up reminders to small business owners who record a personal loan to the balance sheet, alerting them to register it on the PPSR.
