SUPPORTING APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES WAGE SUBSIDY

The Government is supporting small businesses to retain their apprentices and trainees. Eligible employers can apply for a wage subsidy of 50% of the apprentice’s or trainee’s wage paid until 31 March 2021.

ELIGIBILITY

Your small business may be eligible if:

  • you employ fewer than 20 people or 
  • you're a small business with fewer than 20 people, using a Group Training Organisation and
  • the apprentice or trainee was undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship with you on 1 July 2020 for claims after this date. Claims prior to 1 July 2020, will continue to be based on the 1 March 2020 eligibility date.

Your medium-sized business may be eligible if:

  • you employ 199 people or fewer or
  • you're a medium business with 199 people or fewer, using a Group Training Organisation and
  • the apprentice or trainee was undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship with you on 1 July 2020.

Any employer (including all small, medium or large businesses and Group Training Organisations) who re-engages an apprentice or trainee displaced from an eligible small or medium business may also be eligible for the subsidy.

TIMING

Claims for payment must be lodged by 30 June 2021.

HOW TO APPLY

Employers are able to access the subsidy after an eligibility assessment is undertaken by an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider.

BOOSTING APPRENTICESHIP COMMENCEMENTS

To assist with the recovery from the impact of COVID-19, the Australian Government is providing support to all employers who engage a new Australian apprentice. The Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements wage subsidy will support employers and Group Training Organisations to take on new apprentices and trainees.

ELIGIBILITY

Your business or Group Training Organisation may be eligible if:

  • you engage an Australian Apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 31 March 2022, and
  • your Australian Apprentice or trainee is undertaking a Certificate II or higher qualification, and has a training contract that is formally approved by the state training authority.

Eligible employers and Group Training Organisations will receive a wage subsidy of up to 50% of the Australian Apprentice’s gross wage paid. The wage subsidy is available for a maximum of $7,000 per quarter per eligible Australian Apprentice and is available for wages paid from 5 October 2020 to 31 March 2022.
